How to Write Website Copy That Converts Visitors into Customers
Your website design grabs attention. Your copy closes the deal. The best-looking website in the world won’t generate leads if the words on the page don’t persuade visitors to take action. Here’s how to write copy that actually converts.
Lead with Benefits, Not Features
Your customers don’t care that your widget has a “proprietary aluminum alloy housing.” They care that it won’t break in Canadian winters. Translate every feature into a benefit. Instead of “24/7 monitoring,” write “Peace of mind knowing your home is protected around the clock.”
Write for Your Customer, Not Yourself
The most common copywriting mistake: talking about yourself. “We are a leading provider…” No one cares. Flip it. “You deserve a website that works as hard as you do.” Make the customer the hero of the story. Use “you” more than “we.”
Use Clear Calls-to-Action
Every page needs a clear next step. Not “Learn More” (vague) but “Get Your Free Quote” (specific and valuable). Make your CTA buttons stand out visually and repeat them throughout the page. The average visitor needs to see a CTA 3+ times before clicking.
Write How People Talk
Unless you’re writing for a law firm’s privacy policy, drop the corporate jargon. Write in a conversational tone. Short sentences. Active voice. The way you’d explain your business to someone at a Kitchener-Waterloo networking event.
Use Social Proof
Include testimonials, client logos, case studies, and numbers. “We’ve built websites for 200+ Ontario businesses” is more convincing than “We build great websites.” People trust other people’s experiences.
Address Objections
Think about why someone might hesitate to contact you. Too expensive? Address pricing transparency. Too risky? Offer a satisfaction guarantee. Don’t know what they need? Offer a free consultation. Great copy anticipates and resolves doubts.
Keep It Scannable
Most website visitors scan rather than read. Use:
- Short paragraphs (2-3 sentences max)
- Subheadings that tell the story
- Bullet points for lists
- Bold text for key phrases
- Plenty of white space
